How I have been getting coffee for free

January 31, 2018

I like free stuff. The more free stuff I get, the less money I spend - winner. My partner recently got me a lens mug for Christmas. I love my coffee and I especially enjoy it when it is drank from a mug I like holding. Another reason I wanted to get a coffee mug was so I could take it to coffee shops. They say it is greener to bring your own mug and the bonus is you get discount at certain stores. Below are some of stores offering an incentive to bring your own mug.

  • Pret - 50p off.
  • Starbucks - 25p off.
  • Costa - 25p off.

Okay, we like this discount incentive Dan , but where the hell is our free coffee?

Fair enough! What some people do not know, is that Pret staff have a quota each day in which they are allowed to give customers a free coffee. Most don’t know about it, because it hardly ever happens. It certainly never happened to me and I have been going to Pret for years. I even used a local branch where the staff knew me by name - free coffee? Nope, not once.

How I got free coffee

This all changed when my new mug dropped in my hands. People that saw it were mesmerised by it. Some stated that never before had they seen a coffee mug so cool, I was secretly loving all the attention it was bringing me. The admiration for the mug did not stop at people I knew in my life, it quite wonderfully spilled over to the staff at Pret. Impressed by my commitment to being green, and doing so in style, I have now received my free coffee. Not once, or even twice, but 5 times Pret staff have given me that warm tasty caffeine on the house. To put it into perspective, I have been to Pret A Manger 9 times since the turn of the year. For you statistics boffins, that means 55.5% of my coffee has cost me absolutely nothing. In money terms I have saved £11.50, which I could now use for a train ticket (and in some cases a flight) to somewhere new and inspiring to shoot some photography.

Try it yourself, you can get the same mug as me here - Super Duper Lens Mug for all the free coffees.

I hope it works for you like it is for me. Coffee does taste that little bit sweeter when it is put in your hand for free.
