Flights Under 50 is back, and this time I took myself to Cologne, Germany.
Cologne may not be known as one of the world’s hottest tourist destinations, however it is full of life and I came back with a series of images that was more than pleased with. It was a challenge as I was often battling with balancing both my camera and umbrella as it rained 80% of the time I was there, nothing like leaving British weather for, well, British weather.
Cologne’s main hot spot is the cathedral, which was first built in 1248 and has despite a battering in WWII manged to survive. Personally, whenever I am taking a photo of something that has been photographed more times than Kim Kardasian has bored us with her drivel of a life (and that is a lot), I always try to shoot it from a different perspective.
Cologne offers a lovely walk alongside the Rhine River, where you will be able to enjoy cafes and restaurants, see Hohenzollernbrucke Bridge and take in some peace and tranquility. I was able to take this shot at the top of some spiral stairs, which led down to the river pathway.
Cologne does offer shopping if you are one of those people that likes to travel to go to shops that they have all over the world, including your home town. Personally I have no interest in this kind of thing, but for those that do I am sure Cologne will not fail to deliver.
From my perspective, the best street photography comes from off the main roads and in to the side streets. It is quieter which removes excess people from the frame but can also create a challenge in terms of getting something of interest. I was walking aimlessly and came across this elderly couple arguing as they walked towards the city centre. I could not understand them, but I have been around long enough to know those tones of disagreement. I am sure they resolved their issue, and thanks to them for helping me get this shot.
Cologne is a lovely city, two days is more than enough for any one person to stay and is ideal for couple breaks. It is a student city, so lots of young vibrant people hang around on the street enjoying life and creating dreams. It has a nice atmosphere and I never once felt in danger which is always something I look out for when reflecting on a trip.
Really, the only drawback was my flight being delayed on the way home, however every cloud as they say, I did manage to get this shot from the airport.
I will be back with the next Flights Under 50. Hopefully next time there will be less rain.
